| Aastrom Biosciences offers hope
to cancer patients. Its AastromReplicell equipment
grows bone marrow cells and umbilical cord cells
(less controversial sources for stem cells than
embryonic cells) used to replace cells damaged
by cancer treatments and other diseases, including
osteoporosis. AastromReplicell is sold in Europe
by subsidiary Zellera and has been approved in
the US for research and investigational use. Aastrom
is using its cell production system to develop
Tissue Repair Cells, which the firm hopes can
be used in a variety of medical situations to
regenerate healthy human tissue, including bone
tissue (for spinal fusion and fracture repair)
and blood vessel tissue (to restore bloodflow
in limbs). |
