| A Brit might come to the Yankees'
rescue. The US government has contracted with
infectious disease vaccine developer Acambis to
build its stockpile of smallpox vaccine of about
209 million doses. Baxter is helping meet the
order. Acambis is also developing for the US a
Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) vaccine, a more
attenuated form of the vaccine for people with
compromised immune systems; 30 million doses are
on order, pending FDA approval. The MVA contract
could be worth as much as $131 million. In addition
Cangene and Acambis are developing Vaccinia immune
globulin, an antibody product used to prep recipients
for or treat severe reactions to the smallpox
vaccine; FDA approval is needed for it as well.
