Cadus Pharmaceutical had hoped to make some dough from yeast. Its drug discovery technologies used genetically engineered yeast cells, but the firm sold its discovery programs to OSI Pharmaceuticals and is looking for new opportunities. The company even dropped "Pharmaceutical" from its name to signal its interest in acquisitions outside the biotech industry. Investor Carl Icahn, a director and former chairman of the company, owns almost 40% of Cadus.
