What is Alinia used for?

Alinia is used to treat diarrhea caused by the parasites Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lambia in children ages 1 through 11. Safety and effectiveness of Alinia is not known in patient with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), patients with immune problems, children less than 1, children greater than 11, or adults.

What should I tell my doctor or health care provider?

Tell your health care provider if you have: 

  • diabetes, because Alinia contains sucrose, a type of sugar 
  • or had liver problems 
  • or had kidney problems 
  • or had bile or gallbladder problems 

Tell your health care provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Some medicines may affect how Alinia works or Alinia may affect how your other medicines work.

What are some possible side effects of Alinia?

Some possible side effects with Alinia include: 

  • abdominal pain
  • diarrhea 
  • vomiting
